The blast forced my head back, the snap causing the bones in my neck to crackle as they struck one another. I turned toward my attacker, my beast roaring so loudly car alarms went off on the streets three stories below.

“Increase the strength of the blast,” Golden Boy ordered.

“We are not to kill him,” the darker Prillon argued.

They were arguing, each thinking independently of the other. Without their third, the Xeriman, the connection between their minds must have become weak.

Each male adjusted their weapon as I fought to get close enough to finish this fight. A stronger blast and they might take me down.

That was not acceptable.

A silent rumble moved through my chest as if a large truck approached at high speed. Alarmed, I looked around for another threat.

Atlan warlords leaped onto the roof, appearing as if from the shadows. Five of them. Six. They surrounded the Hive Trackers and roared with me. I recognized Velik, the Atlan who worked as a guard at the Interstellar Brides’ Processing Center. Another, Bahre, I recognized from the television, from the program featuring exiled males from The Colony trying to find mates. The other Atlans I did not know, but they focused on the Hive Trackers, not me.

Allies.

My beast barely registered the thought before charging the two Hive Trackers.

They stepped close together and vanished into thin air, the body of the Xeriman male disappearing as well.

“Transport beacons. Fuck.” The warlord named Bahre cursed, and my beast agreed. Bahre had claimed a human female. He wore mating cuffs. The other males’ arms were barren. Unclaimed. No female had found them worthy. Not yet.

I stopped my charge, my beast enraged that the enemy had escaped. He wanted to fight. To kill.

My roar shook the rooftops, and I heard several windows break.

“Knock it off, Warlord, or we’ll have the human helicopters and those fucking police snipers trying to take us out again.” Bahre stepped toward me, either the strongest among them or the most foolish. He looked fierce, scarred. I recognized in him a fellow Atlan who had suffered. Greatly.

“Trackers.” My beast was still in control, and he didn’t feel like explaining.

“No shit.” The Atlan closest to Velik stepped forward. “They’ve been buzzing my brain for days now. We’ve been hunting them, but every time I get close, they disappear.” He held out his arm in a warrior’s greeting. “I am Tane.”

I took his arm in a warrior’s greeting, my beast somewhat eased by the presence of other warlords. “Maxus.” The moment we touched, I heard his mind and I understood. “They can hear you, as I can. That is why you cannot catch them.”

“Shit. I was afraid of that. I can’t turn their noise down any further.” He rubbed a hand through his hair and looked at one of the others. “Maybe Dr. Surnen can figure out a way to take it down a notch when I get back to The Colony.”

“If you go back,” Velik said. “I want to see what Bahre’s lady, Quinn, comes up with.
